Hong Kong’s Most Instagrammable Chinese New Year Decorations in 2024

As the Year of the Dragon approaches, Pacific Place is doing up a traditional Chinese landscape garden. The festive installation combines contemporary design with dazzling floral decorations. The garden at Pacific Place, has details taken from dragon motifs such as curved lines and textured scales. The surroundings boast of a warm palette and dynamic harmony of shades. You can find silk flowers and peach blossoms in vivid colours as well.

Lee Tung Avenue returns with its annual festive displays this Chinese New Year. The decorations continue the avenue’s tradition of creating a blissful lightscape with hundreds of iconic red lanterns above the 200-metre tree-lined walkway. This year, gold-coloured lanterns in the shape of goldfish will take the spotlight. Fish is used to symbolise abundance during Chinese New Year, bringing prosperity and luck to visitors. There will also be lion dances on February 10 and 11, the first two days of the New Year. Besides, a Chinese New Year Parade is set on the third day of the holiday, February 12.

Citygate Outlets is joining hands with local artist Jennifer Hung to bring a breathtaking Chinese New Year decoration to the mall. The “Wings in Blossom” garden draws inspiration from Hung’s childhood passion for paper art and her dedication to promoting sustainability in the craft. For the display, Hung created a floral installation that reflects the beauty of the natural world. Each of the eight installations is handcrafted from recycled paper, Japanese washi, cotton paper, and more. Then, they are meticulously cut out, glued, and assembled into different parts of the flowers. The process took three weeks to come together! Each flower carries its own blessing such as prosperity and wealth for the peony and fulfilment and happiness for the orchid.

To welcome the Year of the Dragon, ifc mall is tipping its hat to spring blossoms by bringing the “Petal of Prosperity” to its Oval Atrium. At the centrepiece is a magnificent six-metre-tall pentamerous floral installation. There are also five petal-shaped zones to visit. These are Path of Blossoms with greeting cards, Blooming Abundance with dahlias, peonies, and roses, and The Aromatic Blossoms where the flowers are infused with fragrance from Jo Malone. Don’t miss out on the Butterfly Blessing Zone and Treasured Moments section complete with a photo booth.

Plaza Hollywood is bringing the famous LINE Friends to Hong Kong this Chinese New Year. Join Brown, Cony, Sally, and Choco to ring in the new year at the Pavilion. Then, step into the love bridge and put your love lock for everlasting devotion. Remember, Valentine’s Day follows right after the New Year festivities. MCP Central blooms in pink to welcome the Year of the Dragon. The shopping mall in Tsueng Kwan O transforms into a Japanese landscape garden with pink hues. You can take a short stroll through the Blessing Chime Tunnel, which features over 500 wind chimes in pastel colours. At the end of the tunnel awaits the Hanami Teahouse, a wooden machiya (townhouse) with hanging scrolls of cherry blossom-themed paintings. Finally, the Forest of Lights & Blossoms draws inspiration from the Kimono Forest in Arashiyama Station, Kyoto. It has 20 columns wrapped in Japanese fabrics.

Festival Walk continues its 25th-anniversary celebration with a Chinese New Year installation. The mall teams up with lifestyle brand, Fat Coffee to ramp up the festive spirit. The decorations tell a story, starring the brand’s figure, Fat Jai. It begins with him flipping through the calendar until he discovers the Year of the Dragon is weeks ahead. So, he quickly calls his friends to join him at Festival Walk. What they see are different kinds of installations like the 18-metre-long dragon, the red and gold lion dance flags, and more.

To ring in the Year of the Dragon, MOSTown partners with popular Japanese character, Kanahei’s Small Animals for its festive installation. MOSTown has multiple themed zones to enjoy, complete with five photo spots and playgrounds all under one roof. The characters, Piske, Usagi, and friends put on the cutest dragon outfits as this year’s mascots to bless visitors. Take a spin on the dragon-themed ‘lucky teacups’ or get clicked at the five-metre tall ferris wheel. You can also accept the challenge at the Golden Pineapple to win limited edition merchandise.
