Meredith Grey is the oldest of Taylor’s three cats, and was adopted in 2011. This Scottish Fold is named after the character from Taylor’s favourite television show, Grey’s Anatomy. The singer once described Meredith Grey as being a very good companion as she’s not afraid of people and is never aggressive. In spite of that statement, Taylor explicitly told the world that her little feline actually loathes having her picture taken.

Aside from several social media posts, Meredith has also starred in Taylor’s 2019 music video ME! alongside her other cat, Olivia Benson.

Olivia Benson

Named for Taylor’s favourite character in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Olivia Benson is the Wednesday child, adopted in June 2014. Reportedly, this Scottish Fold has a higher accumulated net worth than that of the superstar’s lover, Travis Kelce. She appeared in the music videos for ME! on the couch, chilling with Meredith, and in the music video for Karma where she was pictured sleeping like a giant furry goddess.

When Nicole Kidman jetted into Hong Kong in 2021 to film Amazon Prime series Expats, it caused an uproar when she was exempted from quarantining during the city’s strict lockdown measures. And after an alleged bust up with director Lulu Wang, Kidman ended up leaving the city prematurely. But that was 2021, and now finally, almost 3 years later, the drama series is finally hitting our screens.

Expats, premiering Friday 26 January on Amazon Prime, is based on the eponymous novel by Janice Y.K. Lee and centres around three women, Margaret, Mercy and Hilary, played by Kidman, ‎Ji-young Yoo and ‎Sarayu Blue respectivelu, who are all expatriates living in Hong Kong. Their lives are all thrown into chaos when the young son of Kidman’s character, Margaret, goes missing in the city.

To celebrate the release, the cast and crew reunited at the Expats premiere held at the Museum of Modern Art on Sunday in New York.

“When Nicole came to me, to make the series, I just felt like she was meeting me at the height of the success of The Farewell. But people who know me from childhood know we were immigrants (from China),” director Lulu Wang told AP. “I felt like the series had to represent that aspect of my life, like, yes, I’m an American expat in certain contexts, but in another context, I’m a Chinese immigrant. I wanted to really challenge this idea of a bubble that expats have.”

At the time of filming on location in Hong Kong, things didn’t go as smoothly. Local media outlets reported that Kidman and Wang had disagreements over an emotional scene that took place inside a pet shop near Fa Yuen Street in Mong Kok. It reportedly turned into a heated argument that ended with Kidman storming off the set. Filming was put on hold for three days before Kidman requested for a two-month leave away from the city.

The drama didn’t just occur on set. After being spotted filming on the streets of Hong Kong, locals were furious that Kidman was able to enter the city and work without having to quarantine like everybody else. Officials justified Kidman’s exemption on the grounds that she was in Hong Kong “for the purpose of performing designated professional work, taking into account that it is conducive to maintaining the necessary operation and development of Hong Kong’s economy.”

Fortunately, all these years later, the restrictions are lifted, the series is out and the reviews are in. The show’s and its portrayal of the city is already garnering positive reviews from critics, with the Hollywood Reported dubbing it a “rewardingly messy Hong Kong-set Amazon series”.

Justine Triet’s unexpected triumph with ‘Anatomy of a Fall’

In a groundbreaking moment for the Oscars, three of the Best Picture nominees were directed by women, including Celine Song’s Past Lives and Justine Triet’s Anatomy of a Fall. While Barbie creator Greta Gerwig and Song faced snubs in the Best Director category, Triet’s inclusion was a pleasant surprise.

Having previously won the prestigious Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, Triet’s twisty legal drama added a unique flair to the nominations.

However, her directorial prowess failed to secure her a nomination in the highly contested Best Director category. Despite the film earning eight nominations, including Best Picture, Gerwig’s absence in the directing race left fans surprised and questioning the Academy’s choices.

Margot Robbie left out of the Lead Actress race

Despite her exceptional performance in Barbie, Margot Robbie finds herself overlooked in the Best Lead Actress category. Robbie’s portrayal, characterised by impeccable comic timing and emotional depth, failed to secure the Academy’s recognition, leaving fans and critics alike puzzled by the oversight of discounting good acting in comedy.

Barbie also missed out on some other technical nominations, such as cinematography and editing. But it did at least pull off a dark-horse Supporting Actress nomination for America Ferrera alongside another nod for Ryan Gosling in the Best Supporting Actor category.

However, both Ferrera and Gosling have expressed their disappointment for Gerwig and Robbie not being nominated. Gosling even released a statement on Twitter (X) and said he was honoured by his nomination, but that there would be “no Ken without Barbie, and … no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie.”

Oscar’s love-hate relationship with Leonardo DiCaprio continues

Leonardo DiCaprio, known for his versatile performances, faced another snub in the Lead Actor category for Killers of the Flower Moon. The campaign, primarily focused on DiCaprio’s co-star Lily Gladstone, assumed his automatic inclusion. Voters were left amused but not surprised by the miss. After all, it took the actor six Oscar nominations to finally land his first win for The Revenant (2015).

Who are the members of Coldplay?

Chris Martin

Chris Martin is the lead vocalist of Coldplay, and also a had hand (literally) in piano and rhythm guitar. He attended University College London where he graduated with an Ancient World Studies degree with first-class honours in Greek and Latin, and met with every other Coldplay member with the exception of Phil Harvey.

Apart from making music and touring with his band, he has also contributed to a number of artists’ discographies. He wrote Gravity for English rock band Embrace, See It in a Boy’s Eyes for Jamelia, and co-wrote Homesick for Dua Lipa. He also collaborated with Nelly Furtado, Jay-Z, and Avicii for their albums.

In his private life, Chris has been in relationships with Gwyneth Paltrow, Annabelle Wallis, and most recently, Dakota Johnson.

Jonny Buckland

Jonathan Buckland is the lead guitarist of Coldplay. He met Chris Martin during orientation week when he attended University College London, to which Chris said that he is “the bloke who turned out to be the best guitarist” and that meeting him felt like falling in love. His voice can be heard as backup vocals in various songs, most prominently in Don’t Panic in the album Parachutes.

He was in Home Alone with his brother

Yep, he wasn’t the only Culkin on the Home Alone set. Nominations for the 2024 Oscar awards were announced on 23 January live from the Film Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater. A series of Asian names and titles are in the running in some major categories, including Studio Ghibli’s The Boy and the Heron and the monster film Godzilla Minus One.

The announcements were made by Jack Quaid and Zazie Beetz for all 23 categories, including best picture, best director, best actor, and best actress.

Oppenheimer, a strong favourite, received the highest nods with 13. It is in the running in almost all major categories except Best Actress. Poor Things and Killers of the Flower Moon follow with 11 and 10 nominations, respectively.

Barbie, the highest-grossing film of 2023, received eight nominations, including Best Picture. But Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig were not nominated in the Best Actress and Best Director categories, respectively. The snub for the two has led to an uproar on social media. Gerwig, however, has been nominated in the Best Adapted Screenplay category.

Interestingly, this will be the first Academy Awards where the films had to meet two of the four representation and inclusion standards set forth by the Academy to be able to run for the Best Picture nomination.

The 2024 Oscars ceremony will be on 10 March 2024 at the Dolby Theatre and will be broadcast live on ABC. The ceremony will be held from  4 pm – 7:30 pm PT / 7 pm – 10:30 pm ET.

Past Lives stars Greta Lee, Teo Yoo and John Magaro in pivotal roles. It is about two childhood friends in Korea who fall in love, but are forced to grow apart. Their lives intersect over the course of 24 years as they try to understand their love for each other, even though they cannot be together.

Perfect Days

Nominated for: Best International Feature Film

As a movie directed by German filmmaker Wim Wenders, Perfect Days has the unique distinction of being the first film by a non-Japanese director that Japan sent as the country’s official sentry in the Best International Feature Film category in more than 70 years of submissions to the Oscars.

The film’s cast includes Kōji Yakusho, Tokio Emoto and Arisa Nakano among others. It is about a Tokyo janitor, played by Yakusho, who is leading a life of contentment, satisfied with his job. He loves spending time with books and his music. His life takes a turn when he meets a young girl who asks him if he would like to see the ocean.

For his performance, Yakusho won the Best Actor prize at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. Wenders, too, was awarded the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury at the event.

Takashi Yamazaki’s kaiju movie Godzilla Minus One is one of the biggest box office successes in Japan in 2023. Made on a budget of just USD 15 million, the film has grossed around USD 100 million worldwide.

Featuring a large ensemble including Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Yuki Yamada, Munetaka Aoki, and Hidetaka Yoshioka among others, Godzilla Minus One is the 37th film in the Godzilla franchise. It is about the monster of the seas wreaking havoc in post-war Japan

Yamazaki is a winner of six Japanese Academy Awards for Always: Sunset on Third Street (2005) and The Eternal Zero (2013). Thus, the Oscar nomination marks the first in his career.

The six-parter follows three American women whose lives intersect after a sudden family tragedy, and stars Kidman as one of the women, Margaret.

With a long list of films and TV shows under her belt, Kidman is definitely within the realm of the Hollywood A-list today. But, according to her, the Oscar winner‘s acting career got off to a rocky start when she was told as a teenager that she was “too tall” to make it.

Speaking on the Radio Times Podcast, Kidman shared: “I was told, ‘You won’t have a career. You’re too tall.'”

At the age of 13, Kidman was already 5 feet 9 inches (1.75 metres) tall, and she said: “I say I’m 5 feet 10.5 inches (1.79 metres), but I’m really 5 feet 11 inches (1.8 metres).”

Kidman continued: “It will bother me when I’m acting and I want to be small – but then there are times when I appreciate it and can use it in my work.

“Hey, I’m incredibly grateful to be healthy and walking around. Having said that, I’ve had knee issues and all sorts of things – partly because of my height!

“But what I tell my daughters is that none of it matters. What matters is how you allow other people to either say ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to you, and whether you accept that. Inner resilience as a human being, that’s the superpower, really.”

Expats starring Nicole Kidman: What to expect in the new TV series

More recently, Kidman starred in Special Ops: Lioness, but will now feature in Expats, the new series from The Farewell‘s Lulu Wang. Wang has not only written and created the series, but also serves as director and executive producer alongside Kidman and Daniele Tate Melia.

Premiering on Prime Video on January 26, Expats also stars Ji-young Yoo as Mercy and Sarayu Blue as Hilary Starr, with the show based on the internationally best-selling novel The Expatriates by Janice YK Lee.

The official series synopsis reads: “Set against the vibrant and tumultuous tapestry of 2014 Hong Kong, Expats centres on three American women – Margaret (Nicole Kidman), Hilary (Sarayu Blue) and Mercy (Ji-young Yoo) – whose lives intersect after a sudden family tragedy.

“The series interrogates privilege and explores what happens when the line between victimhood and culpability becomes blurred. Brian Tee plays Margaret’s husband Clarke and Jack Huston plays Hilary’s husband David.”

Since hitting Hulu in June 2022, FX’s The Bear, the brainchild of Christopher Storer, has been the only thing entertainment enthusiasts have been gushing about. A culinary rollercoaster seasoned with dark humour and a dash of adrenaline, the series follows Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto, a determined chef running his family restaurant after a tragic homecoming. With a kitchen crew that’s more of a dysfunctional family, including the dubious “cousin” Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), talented sous chef Sydney (Edebiri) and the pastry wizard Marcus (Lionel Boyce), this show serves up a delectable mix of food, grief, and the quest for self-improvement.

What The Bear gets right is the atmosphere of the restaurant business, the nuances that change the way the narrative plays out as well as the excellent performances by the cast. Storer’s win at the Emmys cements the fact that the show’s creators utilised the right kind of research to build this kind of authenticity.

“I just love restaurants so much. The good, the bad, it’s rough. We’re all broken inside and every single day we’ve got to show up and cook and make people feel good by eating something and sitting at a table, and it’s really beautiful, and all of us here get to make a show together, ” Matheson mentioned as part of his post-kiss acceptance speech. Is the story of The Bear real?

In the simplest terms, no. However, director Christopher Storer did infuse some of his real-life experiences into the script, with his Chicago upbringing forming an important part of the narrative. Specifically, Storer’s friendship with Chris Zucchero, whose late father founded the city’s beloved Mr. Beef, is the restaurant that inspired the sandwich shop in Season 1.

“He was the first friend I ever met,” the director said in a media interview. “I wrote a lot of the show hanging out with Chris in what they call the elegant dining room of Mr. Beef, which is actually just an added-on patio.” He added that a lot of the employees he’d see hanging out smoking cigarettes were woven into Richie’s character played by Moss-Bachrach. Understandably, the story of The Bear is to a few degrees, anecdotal.

Not surprisingly, Storer also drew inspiration from conversations he had with real-world chefs. “I can’t tell you how many chefs told me, ‘Oh, yeah, on opening night a toilet exploded.’ Or the sink didn’t work. Or whatever it was. The cooking? That’s one skill of a hundred that it takes to operate a place,” he said in the same interview.

“[Storer] spent a lot of time in that beef place,” executive producer and showrunner, Joanna Calo told Forbes. “And I will also say while we were shooting, that some days we actually did shoot in the Mr. Beef on Orleans, and people would show up and bang on the windows trying to get their beef, and we ruined it for them because we were shooting, and it wasn’t operational that day.”

During her 40 years on earth, screen icon Marilyn Monroe changed the world of cinema and celebrity, but never put foot in Hong Kong. Now, more than 60 years after her tragic death, the Hollywood legend’s personal items are set to be showcased in the city for the very first time.

Highlights from a brand-new auction will be heading to Asia in two exclusive exhibitions presented for the first time in both Hong Kong and Shanghai. The public will be invited to view these artifacts in two museum-like exhibitions to be held first at the Fringe Club in Hong Kong from January 27 to February 1. Afterwards, the collection will travel back to Los Angeles where it will go on auction between March 28 and March 30.

The exhibition will feature personal property consisting of film wardrobe, photographs, documents and ephemera from the fascinating life of Marilyn Monroe, providing a gaze at the icon’s life and times during the height of her fame and influence on American pop culture.

Alongside Monroe’s personal items, the exhibition will also display artifacts from the early life of Playboy’s notorious magazine founder Hugh Hefner, direct from the Playboy Headquarters and Mansion.

Both born in 1926, Marilyn Monroe and Hugh Hefner gained worldwide fame when Monroe appeared in Hefner’s inaugural 1953 issue of Playboy. The magazine’s cover image and centerfold of the actress launched the success of Hefner’s men’s lifestyle magazine which he eventually turned into an empire and iconic global brand. Monroe’s appearance in Playboy turned her into an instant household name and enduring sex symbol who blazed her path like no other in Hollywood.

Strangely, Monroe and Hefner never met in person, yet their legacies are inextricably linked. Even stranger, in 1992 Hefner bought the tomb next to Monroe at Westwood Village Memorial Park in Los Angeles where he was laid to rest in 2017.

Auction highlights include a Mae West-inspired black and cellophane effect evening gown designed by legendary costume designer William Travilla, worn by Monroe during the filming of her classic 1955 film The Seven Year Itch. It comes with a black and white feather boa (not film’s original), similar to the one worn by Monroe with the gown (Estimate: US$100,000-$200,000).

Fans can catch a glimpse of the costume worn by Monroe as Lillian Russell for a pictorial feature in the December 22, 1958 issue of Life magazine, photographed by Richard Avedon. This lavender satin, boned leotard with neckline is trimmed with bouquets of fabric flowers and pink, lavender and cream draped chiffon sashes with pink satin bows and trimmed in lavender, pink and cream chiffon (Estimate: US$20,000- $40,000).

Other highlights from the exhibition include the original Jean Louis painted cream silk jersey cocktail dress worn by Monroe for The Misfits cast press conference in the summer of 1960 (Estimate: US$40,000-$60,000) and her custom shade of Elizabeth Arden lipstick in a goldtone case (Estimate: US$7,000-$9,000).
