‘Stockholm Wood City’ is the name of the world’s largest upcoming wooden city. It is said to ‘demonstrate Swedish sustainable innovation at its best.’ Here’s a closer look.
It seems like timber has been on the rise in recent years, with Switzerland, Norway, and the UK taking initiatives towards wooden office and mixed-use towers, and adding a natural aesthetic to the cities as a whole. Sweden, likewise, has come up with a plan as big as a city. Stockholm Wood City will be the largest timber metropolis that consists of 7,000 office spaces, 2,000 residential spaces, restaurants, and boutique shops, over the span of 250,000 square metres.
The giant project will be developed in Sickla in southern Stockholm by the real estate company Atrium Ljungberg.
Once finished, the organic and authentic Scandinavian aesthetic will wash over the city, but that’s not all. Since global constructions account for 39% of gas emissions around the world, working with wood can decrease the impact on the climate by up to 50% as well as the construction time. Moreover, these timber buildings can also help to enhance air quality and store carbon dioxide, which will align with the city’s focus on self-produced energy. In conclusion, Stockholm Wood City will be a beautiful and environmental-friendly city to live in.
The construction will begin in 2025 with the first building developed by architecture firms White Arkitekter and Henning Larsen expected to complete in 2027.
